When it comes to the good ol’ hockey game, there is no group of guys more passionate about the sport here at Sunbeam than Chris, Eddy, and Tyler who live in one of the residential homes at Kingsway, Whaley house. The ‘boys’ can easily be found by the TV on a hockey night, absorbed in the game. Want to know if the game is a good one? Just watch the smiles that come across Eddy and Tyler’s faces and listen for Chris’ bells jingling with excitement. Their passion for the sport is undeniable.
When we came to visit them to talk about hockey, the boys were dressed in their hockey wears – Chris in his Kitchener Rangers jersey, Eddy in blue for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Tyler in his Leafs jersey.
Hockey has been a focal point for the staff in their relationship with Chris in particular. For the past three years, Chris’ allotted Christmas spending (an amount set aside for each Sunbeam resident) has gone towards purchasing tickets, clothing or souvenirs from the Kitchener Rangers. On March 2nd, Chris went to see the Kitchener Rangers versus The Niagara Ice Dogs. Also attending with Chris was his good friend Allen, his nurse Stallion and Laurie the nurse Manager. Together they all enjoyed the game.
Thank you to the Kitchener Rangers who made that game memorable for Chris with a Welcome on the big screen and also displayed his photo.
When asked what it is about going to a Rangers game that Chris loves, Stallin tells us it’s the fast movement, lights, and all the excitement.
The Rangers said, “We love seeing our friends from Sunbeam Centre out supporting our team. We hope they enjoyed the game and will be back again soon.”
We are so grateful for the awesome partnership opportunities that are available in the K-W community. Working with organizations like the Kitchener Rangers doesn’t just enrich the lives of the folks Sunbeam serves – it reminds us all of the great community spirit that exists here!
