Staff Spotlight: Meet Ben!
When I first joined Sunbeam, it did not take long to get to know the people we support and the colleagues around me, and before I knew it the place felt like somewhere I belonged.
Working across the different group homes taught me something I carry with me now. Every person is fully their own. They have their own routines, their own way of telling you what they need, and their own picture of what makes a day a good one. Being around that taught me to slow down and actually notice the person in front of me instead of assuming I already knew what they wanted. I learned to listen. I learned to be patient. I learned that good support looks different for everyone, and that the work is figuring out what it looks like for this person, today.
These days I look forward to coming in. A lot of that comes down to the relationships I have built with the people we support. When you keep showing up for someone, shift after shift, something quietly changes between you. They start to trust you. They let you a little further into their world. And you begin to see the small victories that mean so much to them, even when they might look small to someone on the outside. The moment someone lights up because you walked through the door is honestly one of the best parts of my day. It reminds me why this work matters.
The other part is the people I work alongside. Talking things through with different staff and supervisors, sharing what has worked, figuring out a tough moment together, all of it makes the team stronger and makes me better at what I do. It also takes some of the weight off the hard days, because you know you are not carrying it alone.
Every shift teaches me something. Every person I support changes how I understand this work a little more. My time at Sunbeam so far has been about growing into the role, building connections that feel real, and finding meaning in the ordinary moments that turn out to be the whole point.
