Promoting and Educating Disability Awareness in Healthcare
The e-book “Am I Ableist” is authored by Canadian Medical Residents with support of disability advocates across Canada. This award-winning* resource aims to educate healthcare providers and practitioners on essential knowledge about persons living with disabilities.
Did You Know?
-
- About 1 in 5 Canadians are currently disabled and most non-disabled people become disabled if they live long enough.
- For many trainees in healthcare, education about disability began before clinical training, with what is portrayed in the media, how the people generally talk about disability, or even being acquainted with people living with disabilities.
- Whatever view of disability society was presented, clinical training usually focuses on clinical manifestations and lacks a social or societal perspective of various disabilities.
- Many clinicians may graduate not only misunderstanding disability but could have unintended biases that could perpetuate inequities and negative health outcomes among disabled persons, with larger societal consequences.
