Inclusive Communication

Happy International Day of Sign Languages!

Sign languages are essential for inclusion and connection. Today, we acknowledge all different types of communication.

Individuals living with developmental disabilities may have limited or no verbal speech, but that does not mean they don’t understand.  They may communicate in other ways, such as through sign language, assistive devices, facial expressions or body language

Best Practices for Inclusive Communication:

    •  Use plain language. Speak slowly and clearly.
    • Utilize visual aids, gestures, or alternative communication tools. Check for understanding.
    • With children, use visuals, toys, or play, as many communicate with pictures or gestures.
    • Ask the family and caregivers about each person’s communication style to connect in the way that works best for them.
